They invite a graduate student to spend six weeks with them over the summer to help Professor Perlman with his work. This summer - 1983 - the student in question is an American named Oliver. While there, Oliver largely associates with the Perlmans' seventeen year old son Elio and Elio's friends, the females among the group whose hearts are aflutter by Oliver's preppy good looks. Oliver, in fact, takes up casually with one of them, Chiara. Elio is an intellectual, but has no experience with girls as he is only now experimenting with his initial stage of manhood and masculinity. If not for Oliver, Elio probably would have chosen Chiara himself, and as such takes up with Marzia instead. Despite their social association and sleeping in adjoining rooms in the villa, Elio doesn't much like Oliver in thinking him too cocky and arrogant partly in that brash American sensibility. In turn, Oliver believes Elio is patronizing in his outward dislike of him. These outward behaviors mask the fact that there is a deep attraction between Elio and Oliver based largely on their admiration of the other's intellect. When they eventually admit that attraction late into Oliver's stay, Oliver is more reticent to act on those feelings in not wanting to ruin his own or Elio's life in still being in the closet, while Elio wants to experience all that sex and love are as he is in the flush of first real love. With Oliver and Elio's clandestine relationship, Elio has to figure out what to do about Marzia, he who may be aware or unaware of her own very deep feelings for him in also experiencing that flush of first love. The other question then becomes if Elio will be able to recover as there will definitely be an end at least to this phase of Oliver and Elio's romance when Oliver leaves to go home at the end of the summer

I absolutely love the way that they just cant keep their hands off of each other😍😍😍😍😍😍. For me... I'm glad, that for a change, there was not that obstacle that antaganist that stands in the way of such love as this. You see that all the time in the movies and in real life and it was a breath of fresh air to just let them have at it knowing all the while that summer would end at some point. Sometimes you just want the characters to achieve their goal even if it's just for a summer.

Like they had to spend so much time together on and off, especially since they were almost the only people who spoke english. And I know its not as romantic as shown because of all the people and cameras but this wasn't a set like others. Luca Guadagnino made quite an impression on me as a filmmaker with A Bigger Splash, a film that combined an engaging narrative with some fantastic performances. With his latest film, Call Me by Your Name, Guadagnino certainly has the potential to repeat the trick and deliver more of the same.
When Oliver (Armie Hammer) a graduate student, arrives to stay with the family of his professor in northern Italy, he meets Elio (Timothée Chalamet) his professor's son. What follows is a summer full of music, food and romance that will forever change their lives.
Rather impressively, Luca Guadagnino follows A Bigger Splash with just as an engaging film however, he shows a much softer hand when dealing with the sensual nature of a film such as Call Me by Your Name. It truly is a beautiful piece of cinema, Guadagnino's direction of the intimate coming-of-age narrative being a real triumph.
There's some genuinely fantastic dialogue included in the screenplay written by Guadagnino, James Ivory and Walter Fasano. The subtlety of the comedy is great but it's the poignancy of the words when relationships come into play that will stay with the audience, particularly a moment shared between Elio and his father towards the end of the film. It's silently powerful stuff.
Coming to the performances, Call Me by Your Name features two leads in Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer who share such a natural and fitting chemistry. It felt much like that shared between Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in Carol, effortless and becoming much more impactful as a result. Chalamet in particular has a very bright future ahead of himself. There's also a fine performance from Michael Stuhlbarg as Elio's father to look out for, balancing the comedy and emotion expertly.
I expect people to make comparisons between Call Me by Your Name and Moonlight given the nature of their subject matter however, I'd rather not see people try and play them off against one another because they both deserve such high praise. Being in the company of such a film is a major achievement for a film like Call Me by Your Name.

Oliver saying I remember everything makes me appreciate this scene so much more, in that it's different from the book version which had a more dismal ending. André Aciman really knows how to break people's hearts😞. I cry every time when I watch this clip. Such a memorable moment. I love when Timothee speak Italian so much. Very alluring. Just like the old stars like Greta Garbo in silent movies that acted with their eyes and faces. This kid is amazing. I don't resent James Ivory this win, at all. However, why was the author of the book Call Me By Your Name at the ceremony and Greg Sestero wasn't? ALL of the authors should have received an invitation. This category (and these great movies) wouldn't even exist without the source material. Supposedly, Sestero was reduced to scrambling around until the last minute trying to get an invite, which is a disgrace.
